Richmond Olympic Oval High Performance Hockey Program

Oval-Rink1Nate Leslie & his professional coaching team at Leslie Global Sports lead on ice portion of the Richmond Olympic Oval High Performance Hockey Program.

We cater to teams, private training groups, and individuals in the fall, winter, spring and summer.  We provide elite hockey training with the needs of every individual player in mind

Nate Leslie has created a unique system of coach and player mentorship. I’ve enjoyed watching LGS develop their coaching business with the same professionalism and passion they brought to the game as players. —Andy Murray: 2009 Jack Adams NHL Coach of the Year Finalist and member of IIHF Hall of Fame

Richmond Oval High Performance Hockey Program: In Nate’s Words

Session Structure:

“We break the group into smaller groups by ability most of the time to ensure that we can challenge every player.  We focus on small area skill isolation drills to identify areas to correct.  A typical session starts with a fun energizer and ends with  a small area game.  Shoehorned in between those competitive situations we focus on 20 minutes of technical skating, 20 minutes of technical high level stickhandling and shooting, and 20 minutes of game situation scoring scenarios often customized by position.  I’d say that the higher the skill level of the players, the 20 minutes of game situation scoring drills would increase.  We try to isolate skills then put them in game situations.”

Bonus: NHL Goal Simulations:

“The players love our NHL Goal Simulations.  Using an iPad on the ice, we show them a goal from a recent NHL or high level game.  The players accept our challenge to recreate the scenario. Huge encouragement when they ‘nail it’ really keeps them motivated.  Example: recently we simulated Patrik Laine’s 1st goal of his 2 goal performance.  He scored a fade away one timer in the slot.  Breaking it down, then recording the kids’ attempts, we compared the two to find subtle differences in technique.  This won’t occur every single session, but often enough that the kids really jump right into it, and enjoy it.  I hope this helps give a clear picture of our approach and explains our ability to challenge every player!”

Players will learn values and behaviours associated with successful teamwork and performance. With a smaller coach to player ratio, athletes will benefit from greater personalized feedback.

The Richmond Olympic Oval High Performance Program (Oval HP) on-ice player sessions offer competitive and player centered instruction for committed athletes in a fun, educational and inspiring environment. All ice sessions are capped at a player to coach ratio of 6-8:1.

Strength and Conditioning:

Customized for every player, our strength and conditioning sessions develop the physical skills, abilities and physiological attributes fundamental to successful hockey performance. Critical periods of trainability in youth, maturation and level appropriate sessions build fundamental movement skills and physical abilities in line with the Canadian Sport for Life Long Term Athlete Development model.

Sessions for older players focus on the development of whole body strength and durability, stride power, conditioning, core stability and rotary power.  Each coach comes with a wealth of both playing and coaching experience and have guided hundreds of players and goalies from development to full-ride scholarships and professional contracts.

Elite Goaltending:

Rep Goaltenders at the Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget levels will participate in on-ice sessions delivered by Elite Goalies.  These sessions develop and refine goalie specific on-ice technical skills and position specific strategies.  The program builds consistency and continued improvement throughout the season.

Reserved for a maximum of 8 goalies with a player- instructor ratio of 1 to 4. Small group goalie specific and private instruction are also available.
